The Nanbu Jukan Railway opened in 1962 between Chibiki and Shichinohe, and was later extended to Noheji using the trackbed of the former Tohoku Main Line that was created by a track switch.
From its opening until its suspension in 1997, the line was characterized by the use of two-axle rail buses as its main means of transport.
